What's Happening in Design in 2026?

March 26, 20263 min read

Remember our earlier blog post this month, where we discussed the difference between a fleeting fad and a lasting design trend? You want to create a look that will serve your clients for years, not just a few months. Well, hold onto your measuring tapes, because we're about to dive deep into the exciting landscape of 2026 interior design trends!

First we want to mention that tit is the nuances of a trend that give it lasting power. At The-DSA.com, we’re all about giving you the tools to create spaces that are both current and timeless. This isn't just about spotting the next "it" color (though we’ll definitely cover that!). We're talking about broader shifts in how we live, work, and connect within our homes, and how these shifts translate into beautiful, functional spaces for your clients. Things lke small contained spaces to open floor plans are as much trends as the latest color of the year or shiplap.

Ready to see what the future holds? Here’s a sneak peek at some of the key themes we're tracking for 2026:

1. Texture and Tactile: Think organic shapes, natural materials (think beyond just wood!), and a celebration of texture. We're seeing a move away from overly sleek, minimalist spaces and a wholehearted embrace of warmth, coziness, and biophilic elements. Think rough-hewn stone accents, plush, hand-woven textiles, and furniture that mimics the irregular curves of nature.Take a look around and see how reeded wood panels have become the go to for feature walls. Wood cabinets are starting to push out painted cabinets in our kitchens.

2. Storytelling Spaces: Story telling is a critical part of 2026 and we don't mean with a mass produced pillow that says home or live, laugh, love. It means incorporating unique, artisan-made pieces, vintage finds, and heirloom items that reflect your client's personality and experiences. It’s not just about curated eclectic style; it's about spaces that are genuinely lived in and deeply personal. Just today, my Mom and I were playing cards at a table that was her Great-Grandmothers and it prompted stories of her as a little girl playing games at the same table. I promise a new mass-produced table would never have prompted that conversation.

3. Wellness Redefined: Wellbeing is no longer just a trend; it's a way of life. In design, this means a deeper focus on creating spaces that support mental and physical health. Think smart home technology that enhances air quality and sleep hygiene, dedicated meditation or exercise nooks, and the strategic use of color and lighting to create calm and focused areas. Do your homework so you can understand the latest in wellness and technology so you can help your clients weave wellness into their homes.

4. The Multifunctional Marvel: As homes continue to serve as offices, gyms, and sanctuaries, the demand for truly flexible and multifunctional furniture and spaces is only growing. Think modular furniture systems, concealed storage solutions, and clever room-defining techniques that allow spaces to adapt to the changing needs of the day. Go beyond the decor and furniture and think of TV's that disappear, walls that can open and close, and so much more.
